Captain Emily Biss was raised in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and spent many childhood weekends exploring the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. In 1991, she graduated from George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Maine and enrolled in Brown University. She started flying while on an exchange program at the University of North Dakota several years later and liked it so much she stayed for two more semesters, ultimately earning her Commercial License & Instrument Rating. After graduating from Brown University in 1996 with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and American Civilization, she worked as a Systems Engineer for Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, CA on several different satellite programs. Ultimately, she left in 2001 to pursue a full-time flying career. She has worked as a flight instructor, maintenance test pilot, and airline pilot before coming to Boeing in August of 2007 as a production test pilot. She has over 4,700 hours in 57 types of aircraft. Two of her favorite planes are the American Champion Citabria (7ECA) and de Havilland Twin Otter (DHC-6-300). She is a proud member of the Ninety-Nines and Women in Aviation. She was accepted into the Society of Experimental Test Pilots in the spring of 2010.

Looking for Amelia's Electra

In early 2009, the Waitt Institute for Discobery conducted an extensive deep-sea search for Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra in the area of the South Pacific where many researchers believe she crashed. The expedition, known as CATALYST 2, utilized the Waitt Institute’s REMUS 6000 Autonomous Underwater Vehicles to survey over 2,000 square miles of ocean floor at an average depth of 5,200 meters.
